Maud Lewis
(b 1903 – d 1970), South Ohio, NS
Maud Lewis was a Canadian folk artist from Nova Scotia. She lived most of her life in poverty in a small house using house paints that she found abandoned in the trash. Maud continued her painting after developing chronic rheumatoid arthritis, which significantly reduced her mobility. She achieved national recognition in 1964 for her cheerful and naive folk art paintings following an article in a prominent Canadian newspaper and a national TV news show. Two of Lewis' paintings were ordered by the White House in the 1970s during Richard Nixon's presidency. Several books, plays and films have been produced about her. She remains one of Canada's most celebrated folk artists.
