Jules Olitski
b 2007– d 1983, Snovsk, Ukraine
Olitski was born with the name Jevel Demikovsky in Snovsk, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Within a few months of his birth, his father was tragically executed by the Soviet government. His mother and grandmother escaped and emigrated to the United States within that fiscal year and settled in Brooklyn, NY.
Olitski had his first significant showing at Galerie Huit, Paris in 1951. He adjusted his early style by focusing on monochromatic art celebrating empty centers. In 1961 he won notoriety at the Carnegie International and his art began to be collected by museums. Olitski had over 150 one-person exhibitions in his lifetime and is represented in museums worldwide.
